What to Check Before Your Shower Door Is Installed

Check four things the day before the fitter arrives: that the surfaces the door fixes to are finished and dry, that the base is set and level, that the packaged panel fits through the route into the bathroom, and that every supplied part is present. Those four cover almost every reason an installation needs a second visit.

A shower door installation that has to be repeated usually fails before the fitter arrives, not during the fitting. The opening is not finished, the base is not ready, the access is narrower than the packaging, or the surfaces that were measured have changed since the door was made. Every one of those is visible a day or two in advance, and every one of them costs a second visit once the fitter is standing in the bathroom.

The check before the installer arrives

The purpose of the check is to confirm that the room is in the state the installation assumes. That means the surfaces the door will be fixed to are finished and dry, the base or tray is set and level, the opening measures what the door was made to, and the parts that were supplied are all present and undamaged. None of this requires tools beyond a tape and a level, and all of it can be done by walking the room.

The two items that cause most of the problems are the surfaces and the base. A wall that is still being tiled is a wall whose finished face does not exist yet, so the opening cannot be confirmed against the door. A base that has just been installed and is still bedding in cannot be drilled or loaded, and a door set onto a base that then moves will not stay in line. Access and clearance to confirm

Access is the check that is easiest to forget and hardest to fix on the day. Glass arrives in protective packaging that is bulkier than the panel inside it, and the route from the outside of the building to the bathroom has to accept that package at every point: the front door, the stair or lift, the turn at the top of the stairs, and the bathroom doorway itself.

What to walk before the fitting day

  1. The route in. Walk the path the package will take, and look at the tightest turn rather than the widest doorway.
  2. The working space inside. The fitter needs room to stand and to hold a panel while it is positioned, which is a different requirement from the space the bathroom has when it is empty.
  3. What has to move. Anything that will be in the way - a vanity unit, a mirror cabinet, a radiator, a towel rail - is better moved before the fitting than during it.
  4. Services and access. Water isolation, power for tools and light to work by; a bathroom without light in the evening slows the job down and increases the risk of a mistake.

Clearing the route and the working space also removes the most common cause of accidental damage: a panel that is moved twice, once to get past an obstacle and once to be fitted, is a panel that has been at risk twice.

Materials and cure times

Sealant is the part of the job that sets the schedule after the fitter leaves. Where a joint is sealed, the sealant needs its own cure time before the shower is used, and that time comes from the product rather than from a rule of thumb; the pack or the installation instructions state it, and the first use of the shower should be planned around it.

Two related decisions belong to the same moment. The first is when the enclosure can be adjusted: a door that has just been fitted should be checked before any static joint is sealed, because sealing fixes the geometry in place. The second is what happens if something has to be corrected afterwards: a joint that was sealed early has to be cut out to be corrected, which is a slower repair than adjusting the door first. Materials also include the consumables the fitter expects to have on site: sealant suited to the surfaces being joined, and the fixings the door needs for the wall type it meets. A door supplied for one wall construction and fitted to another is a return visit waiting to happen unless the difference is identified in advance.
