Glass Railing Panels: How to Choose, Measure and Mount Them

Glass railing panels are the flat sheets of safety glass used as a guard at a stair, landing, balcony or low wall. They replace a row of vertical bars or a panel-and-post system with one continuous transparent surface, so the structure behind the railing stays visible and the room reads wider than it is. This guide covers what the panels are, how an opening is measured for them, how they are mounted, and when a continuous run is the better choice than a set of single panels.

What a Frameless Glass Railing Panel Is

A frameless glass railing panel is a single piece of glass held only at its base. There is no top rail and no vertical post between panels, which is why the finish looks like a sheet of glass standing on the floor rather than a railing with something removed. Each panel is sized to one fixed module of the opening, so a run is built up from repeated panels rather than from one long sheet.

Because the panel is unsupported above the base fixing, the glass itself carries the load. That is the reason railing panels are made from safety glass rather than ordinary annealed glass: safety glass is specified for the way it behaves if it is ever broken, not only for its strength in normal use. If a panel is damaged, it is replaced as a unit.

Two product directions cover most projects. A standard panel is made to a fixed size that repeats along a run, which suits a straight stair, a landing or a balcony edge with regular spacing. A custom panel is made to the opening the builder measures on site, which suits an angled landing, a return, a corner, or a run where the fixing points cannot be placed at regular centres. Measuring an Opening for a Railing Panel

Railing glass is ordered to the finished opening, so measurement happens after the floor, the stair stringer or the low wall is complete. Measuring to a surface that will still be tiled or rendered is the most common source of a panel that arrives short.

Work through the opening in this order:

  1. Confirm the finished floor level and the finished top of any low wall or curb the panel will sit on. Both surfaces belong to the measurement.
  2. Measure the clear width of the opening between the end posts, walls or returns, and take the width at the bottom and again at the top. Use the smaller figure.
  3. Record the height from the finished floor to the top edge you want the glass to reach. On a stair, the height is measured at the nose of each tread, because the panel follows the slope.
  4. Mark the fixing centres. On a straight run these repeat at the module you have chosen; on a corner or return they are set by the geometry, not by a fixed spacing.
  5. Photograph each fixing location with a tape visible, and note anything that will change it: a door swing, a radiator, a change of floor finish, or a wall that is not plumb.

Two checks are worth doing before the order is placed. First, check that the ends of the opening are parallel; a run that tapers means the end panels cannot be interchangeable with the middle ones. Second, check the base surface for level along the whole run. A base that falls towards one end will tilt every panel on it, and no amount of care in the panel order will correct that.

Mounting Options and What They Require

Almost every frameless railing panel is fixed at the base. What differs is how the glass is gripped, and that choice is usually made by the condition of the floor and the look you want rather than by the glass.

Base shoe or channel mounting. The glass sits in a continuous metal channel that is fixed to the floor or curb. The channel supports the panel along its whole width, which makes it the most tolerant option where the floor is sound and can take a fixing. It also reads as a deliberate base detail. The channel has to be set level and straight, because any twist in it is transferred to every panel.

Standoff or spigot mounting. The glass is held at discrete points instead of continuously. Fewer fixings are visible, so the glass reads as standing on its own, but each fixing point has to be set precisely and the floor has to accept a fixing at each of those points. This option suits a finished floor that can take local fixings but not a continuous drilled channel.

Whichever route is chosen, three requirements come before the glass arrives: the base must be structural enough to take the fixing and the load, the base must be flat and level along the run, and the fixing centres must be final. Choosing Between Railing Runs and Single Panels

The decision is about repetition, not about size. A run is the right answer when the opening repeats; single panels are the right answer when it does not.

Choose a continuous run when the opening is long and straight, when the fixing points can repeat at regular centres, and when you want the panels to read as one surface. Runs are simpler to order because the panel repeats, and simpler to replace because a damaged panel can be swapped for another of the same module.

Choose individual and custom panels when the geometry changes along the opening: an angled landing, a return at the end of a flight, a corner where two runs meet, or a guard that has to step down with the floor. These panels are all different, so each one is measured and ordered on its own.

A few practical limits apply to both. Keep the run on one base condition; mixing a solid floor and a timber joist run under the same continuous channel creates two different fixing behaviours. Keep the ends of the run closed so the glass cannot move sideways. And plan the order so the glass arrives after the base work, not before it, because glass that sits on site through floor work is glass that gets chipped.

If the project is still at the design stage, the useful next step is to decide the base condition and the fixing centres. Both of those decide the panel sizes, and both are cheaper to change now than after the glass is cut.
